❓ Frequently asked questions

The things everyone asks

Answered the way they would be answered on the phone — plainly, without hedging, and without trying to sell you the bigger job.

The basics

Working with HEAT ON 24/7

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. HEAT ON 24/7 is Gas Safe registered, registration number 949821. Ask to see the card on the doorstep: it carries a photo, a licence number, an expiry date and the exact gas work the engineer is qualified for. You can verify any number on the Gas Safe Register website or by calling 0800 408 5500.

Will I get a price before work starts?

Always. You will know the cost before any work begins, and nothing gets added without asking you first. Quotes are free and carry no obligation — you are welcome to take ours and compare it.

Is the work guaranteed?

Our workmanship carries a 12-month guarantee. Parts carry the manufacturer's own warranty, and on a new boiler installation we register that warranty for you.

Who actually turns up?

Ali. You speak to the engineer on the phone and the same person arrives at the door and does the work — no call centre, no subcontractor you have never spoken to.

How do I book?

Call or WhatsApp 07454 118822, use the booking form on this site, or chat to Ember, our booking assistant, in the bottom-right corner of your screen. All three land in the same place.

How do you take payment?

Payment is due once the work is finished and you are happy with it. Ask when you book if you need an invoice for a letting agent, an insurer or your own records.

Emergencies

When something has gone wrong right now

What do I do if I can smell gas?

Do not ring us first. Open doors and windows, do not touch any electrical switches or use your phone indoors, turn the gas off at the meter if you can safely reach it, get everyone out of the building, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. They attend free of charge and make it safe. Once it is safe, call us to repair it.

Do you really answer the phone at night?

Yes, for genuine emergencies — no heating in winter, no hot water, a burst pipe or a serious leak. Ring 07454 118822 and you will speak to an engineer rather than an answering service.

My boiler has locked out. Can I just keep resetting it?

Reset it once. If it locks out again, stop. A lockout is the boiler protecting itself from a fault it has detected, and repeatedly resetting it hides the problem rather than fixing it — occasionally with expensive consequences. Note the error code and ring us.

Water is pouring out. What should I turn off?

Turn the water off at the stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — then open the cold taps to drain the pipes down, and turn the heating off. Keep water away from electrics, and switch that circuit off at the consumer unit if it is anywhere near. Then ring 07454 118822.

Should I have a carbon monoxide alarm?

Yes. Carbon monoxide has no smell, no taste and no colour, and an audible alarm to BS EN 50291 costs very little. Fit one in any room with a gas appliance, test it monthly, and replace it at the end-of-life date printed on it. In England, landlords are required to have one in any room used as living accommodation that contains a fixed combustion appliance.

Boilers

Repairs, servicing and replacement

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year. Every mainstream manufacturer specifies an annual service and most make it a condition of the warranty, so skipping one can turn a covered repair into a bill. Late summer is the best time to book.

How long should a boiler last?

Around 10 to 15 years for a well-installed, annually serviced boiler on a clean system. Boilers on sludged-up systems that have never been serviced routinely fail a good deal sooner.

Should I repair or replace?

It depends on age, which part has failed and what else is close to going. As a rough rule, once a boiler is past about twelve and needs a major component such as a heat exchanger or a PCB, replacing usually works out better. We will give you the honest arithmetic, including when the answer is the cheaper one for us.

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

Water is escaping somewhere: a small leak on the system, a failed expansion vessel, or a pressure relief valve passing water out through the outside pipe. Topping it up every week is treating a symptom — there is a full write-up in our guide to boilers losing pressure.

What pressure should my boiler be at?

Most combi boilers want somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar cold, and it will read higher when the heating is hot. Check your manual for the exact figure, because it does vary by make.

Landlords

Gas safety certificates

How often do I need a gas safety certificate?

Every 12 months, on every gas appliance and flue in a let property. Have the check done within the two months before expiry and the original anniversary date is preserved, so booking early does not cost you part of the year.

What happens if I do not have one?

You are breaking the law, and the consequences stack up: prosecution and fines, landlord insurance that will not respond, and a Section 21 notice that cannot be served. It is one of the cheapest legal duties a landlord has and one of the most expensive to skip.

Do I need one as an owner-occupier?

No, the duty is on landlords. An annual service is still strongly advisable, and is almost certainly required by your boiler warranty.

Can you handle several properties?

Yes. Tell us how many when you ring and they can be booked together, with renewal dates tracked so nothing lapses. Evening and weekend appointments are available, which removes most of the access problems.
